Printing History
Woodblock Printing
Woodblock printing is the first-ever type of printing practice invented in the history of printing. It originated in East Asia in 220 A.D. The earliest surviving woodblock printed fragments are from China. They were of silk printed with flowers in three colors from the Han Dynasty.
From there on the habitude of printing passed into the Islamic World which was Arabic Egypt during the ninth and tenth centuries, mostly for prayers and amulets.
The journey didn’t stop and from there on it traveled to the continent, Europe. Block printing first came to Europe as a method for printing on cloth, where it was common by 1300.
Movable Printing
Movable type printing is the system of printing and typography using movable pieces of metal type, made by casting from matrices struck by letter punches.
Around 1040, the first known movable type system was created in China by Bi Sheng out of porcelain.
What is porcelain?
Porcelain is a clay-like substance and was used to ignite glaze in the ancient time. However, now it is now used for tableware, decorative objects, laboratory equipment, and electrical insulators.
The Printing Press
A printing press is a mechanical device for applying pressure to an inked surface upon a print medium (such as paper or cloth), thereby transferring the ink.
Around 1450, Johannes Gutenberg introduced the first movable type printing system in Europe
He was the first one to create his type pieces from an alloy of lead, tin, antimony, copper, and bismuth. These are the same components used to date.
In the earlier printing methods, the cloth, paper, or other medium was brushed or rubbed on repeatedly to achieve the transfer of ink, and now the printing press has accelerated the process.
The invention of the printing press was one of the most influential events in the second millennium.
Modern Printing Techniques
Laser Printing- A laser printer is a printer that uses a focused beam of light to transfer text and images onto paper. It is a misconception that laser burn paper. However, it's the opposite: the paper passes through the printer, the laser beam fires at the surface of a cylindrical drum called a photoreceptor and Hence, the image is transferred to the paper. Laser printers typically have a resolution of 600 dpi (dots per inch) or higher.
Thermal Printing- A thermal printer is a printer that uses heat in order to print the image on paper. Due to the high quality of the print, speed, and technological advances it has become one of the most popular methods of printing and is largely used in airline, banking, entertainment, retail, grocery, and healthcare industries.
Digital Printing Process- It is a process of printing on different media like paper, fabric, acrylic, plastic, etc., directly from a digital image. The most popular types of printers used in the digital printing process are inkjet and laser printers that drop pigments or toners on numerous substrates like paper, glass, canvas, metal, fabric, marble, and plastic.
